LASMNY is a non-profit public interest law firm. We provide free legal information, advice and representation to people who are unable to afford a lawyer. The program area includes (13) counties: Broome, Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Otsego. In addition, our Farmworker Law Project services the entire New York State out of our New Paltz Office.
LASMNY is actively seeking many dynamic full-time staff attorneys for our Eviction Defense Program. The employment opportunities are available immediately in the office of your choice, as available. Travel will be required. The position reports to the managing attorney.
Essential Job Functions
The staff attorney will provide direct and comprehensive legal services to eligible clients including advice, negotiation, motion practice, discovery and litigation. Specifically, will offer holistic services to clients with financial and other hardships that could result in loss of housing. Will appear in the City, Town, and Village Courts across our region in eviction and warranty of habitability cases. Will engage in education and outreach efforts targeting community members, advocates and service providers. Will comply with all Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations, LASMNY policies and procedures and grant-based reporting requirements.
Job Qualifications
The successful candidate must be admitted to the New York State (NYS) Bar. Law Graduates with strong writing backgrounds may be considered. Trial experience is preferred. Commitment to serving indigent community members. Three to five years of legal experience preferred. The candidate will demonstrate excellent written and verbal advocacy, legal research, problem solving and organizational skills. Ability to work independently, efficiently and collaboratively with individuals both within and outside LASMNY. Bilingual or multilingual a plus.

Salary
Admitted to the NYS Bar: Estimated salary range is $60,000 to $90,540, DOE.

LASMNY has full-time paralegal positions to provide support for our Eviction Defense Program/Outreach - Intake, HelpLine and Litigation. The employment opportunities are available immediately in multiple locations.
Eviction Defense Program/Outreach: Supports the work of attorneys, primarily landlord - tenant matters, who are providing legal assistance and advocacy to individuals and families at risk of homelessness. Office location: Utica, Syracuse & Binghamton.
Intake/HelpLine: Primary Responsibilities will be to screen calls from applicants seeking civil legal assistance to determine whether callers are eligible for assistance, open intakes in our case management system for eligible callers, and follow intake protocols to property refer callers. Office Location: Utica
Litigation: Primary responsibilities will provide litigation support in the area of family and domestic violence law, including drafting pleadings, discovery demands, motions, document management and general case management. Office Location: Utica
Job Qualifications
The successful candidate will have an Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, paralegal certificate or an equivalent combination of prior work experience preferably in a legal environment. Other qualifying factors include the nature and extent of prior relavent experience, knowledge of understanding of legal problems and needs of low-income persons, prior experience in the client community or in other programs to aid low-income persons. Bilingual or multilingual a plus.
Salary
Estimated salary range: $40,250 to $61,378, DOE.
